Hands on local logistics management in Brazil

03 Dec 2009

Working on the coordination of internal logistics to the delivery port of Angra dos Reis for Petrobas’s Tupi oil field project in Brazil’s Santos Basin, Tata Steel International is playing a significant role in one of the largest contracts ever placed with Corus Tubes - 138 km or 45,000 metric tonnes of 1.0 inch and 1.25 inch thick 18 inch diameter pipe, the thickest 18 inch pipe ever produced.

By describing a few salient features of the Tupi project Corus man on the ground, Alex Paz places it in its true perspective as a major contributor to the Brazilian economy. The following data also helps us to recognise the relevance of the combined facilities of quality material supply with technical support and reliable logistics management to the placement of major contracts:

“We had been working here locally with the customer at every stage in this project from its inception to when the order was placed. It’s an interesting project in that it is the largest oil and gas discovery in Brazil and first commercial light oil and gas field in the Santos Basin pre salt area.

"With estimated reserves of five to eight billion barrels, the Tupi project is due to start production at the end of 2010. In operating depths of up to 2,200 metres, the field is around 290 km from the coast and will be linked by 228 km pipeline to the Mexilhao platform145 km from the coast.

"Our delivery timeline ran from July to November 2009 during which period we coordinated internal logistics for delivery to the Port of Angra dos Reis and staying in close touch with our colleagues at Corus Tubes and the BSR Corus coating plant who have collectively met the very difficult technical requirements of the contract.”
